Lirac by Roger Sabon

£21.00
Read more

Lirac has become a great source of good value wines, full bodied reds that have a rich and silky spiciness. This example from Châteauneuf-du-Pape property Roger Sabon is no exception, it is initially perfumed and floral, backed up by smoky berry notes on the palate with a rich long finish. Pair with hearty foods such as a beef stew or brouffade.

Domaine du Petit Pérou Brouilly Pisse Vieille

£21.00
Add to basket

The ‘Pisse Vieille’ district of Brouilly is so highly regarded that it is the only officially recognized sub-zone in the region and this wine is a testament to that great terroir. The palate is classic Beaujolais, packed to the rafters with ripe berries and cherries on soft and supple tannins, with spicy notes developing through the long finish.

Bruno Sorg Gewurztraminer

£21.00
Add to basket

Bruno Sorg is the source of some of the finest, richest and most concentrated wines in Alsace, and this Gewurztraminer is no exception.  Picked slightly later than its neighbours so it’s rich and unctuous, with flavours of rose petals and ripe lychee on the nose, leading to peach and mango on the palate. A spine of acidity keeps all this fruit in check, leading to a softly spiced dry finsh.

A magnificent wine which complements spicy food perfectly, or try with a funky wash rind cheese such as Epoisses or Vacherin.

Les Chemins de L’Arkose, Le Clos Parcellaire Gamay

£22.00
Read more

Le Clos Rouge Cuvée Parcellaire hails from a plot of old Gamay with some Pinot Noir planted on calcareous soil with basaltic debris. This red has a touch more body than their other wines, but is still marked by mountain freshness, and its purity is down to excellent work in the vines and sympathetic low-intervention winemaking.  A delightful natural wine, aged in amphora. Flavours of juicy red berries and pepper.

Domaine Bruno Sorg, Cremant d’Alsace

£22.00
Add to basket

This is the source of some of the finest, richest and most concentrated wines in Alsace. Superb Gewürztraminer and Pinot Gris and perhaps the finest Muscat in Alsace, but also home to great Riesling. The late Bruno and his son François realised a dream ten years ago with the final purchase of a plot of steep ‘garrigue’ in the heart of the Grand Cru Pfersigberg. They now have amassed 1½ hectares in one plot. Bruno had secretly been buying parcels of this land for the last 30 years. Much hard work was necessary, in clearing the forest and then terracing the very steep slopes.

François Sorg makes beautifully balanced Crémant from 50% Pinot Blanc, Pinot Auxerrois, 10% Pinot Gris and 40% Chardonnay.

Domaine Hippolyte-Reverdy Sancerre

£22.50
Add to basket

Michel Reverdy farms 14ha of vines of which 11 are given over to producing Sancerre blanc. This is a benchmark producer of Sancerre, farming the old fashioned, tried and tested way – hard work and sweat! His family have grown grapes in the area since the 16th century with Michel joining his father and brothers in 1971.

Sancerre Blanc matches perfectly with fish and seafood. It is also very appreciated with the other local specialty, the goat cheese Crottin de Chavignol.  A pure and fresh sauvignon blanc.

Domaine Balland Sancerre

£22.50
Read more

Jean-Paul Balland has handed over the running of the domaine to his two daughters, Elise and Isabelle. It is said that Jean-Paul made the best wine in the village and was one of the first in Sancerre to vinify Sauvignon Blanc in oak. We certainly don’t believe that Isabelle is doing any less well – lovely wines.  Their Sancerre Blanc comes from a mixture of limestone pebbly stones and calcareous-clay, and are fermented and aged in stainless steel and undergo regular bâtonnage.

Intense aroma, with scents of anise and mint associated to sweet quince and pineapple. On the palate mild ripe peachy fruits with hints of citrus and fresh herbs. The attack is lively, fresh and floral (honeysuckle, acacia).

Emile Balland planted the first vines in 2000, in the heart of the Coteaux de Giennois region. The son of a winemaker and oenologist, he created his own vineyard which today consists of 7 hectares in the Coteaux de Giennois and less than one hectare in Sancerre. Everything he does is with the utmost respect for the environment, his vineyards are ploughed by horse.  This is top class Sancerre with juicy fruits and a mineral finish.

Pineau des Charentes Rastignac

£22.95

Taking it’s name from the ambitious character in Balzac’s Pere Goriot, this is a sweetish, fortified wine from Charente-Maritime.  Very rich aromas made up of fresh fruit (peach, plum and fig) and dried fruit (almond, prune).  On the palate, fresh fruit dominates, with citrus flavours helping to balance the sweetness.  The finish has a hint of honey and vanilla.  A gorgeous aperitif, but can go well with duck too.

Pineau des Charentes is such a wonderful and underrated tipple, made from Ugni blanc grape must, blended with 2 year old Cognac, you should be drinking more of this!

This is a charming 7 hectares Domaine owned and run by Nicole Chanrion, who is a star grower.  Nicole studied viticulture in Beaune at a time when there were not many women doing so. She is delighted that there are more female winemakers nowadays. The Domaine was started by her grandfather, but she can trace her family roots in viticulture back to the 1840s.

Together with her son Romain, they produce delicious, pure Côte de Brouilly. Their vines are east facing, some slightly south facing. The alluvial soils here are very diverse and the roches bleues give a mineral, pepper spice note to the wine.

Domaine de Durban, Muscat de Beaumes de Venise

Domaine de Durban must be one of the most gloriously situated estates in the whole of France.  The property has a charming house with a panoramic view over the Ventoux in three different directions.

Mme Leydier’s son Henri makes their delicious vin doux from 25 hectares of 35-year-old vines of Muscat à petits grains.  The grapes are harvested manually and after a long cold fermentation in tank, the wine is left on its fine lees for 4 to 5 months before bottling after a light filtration.

This is 100% Muscat, with aromas of peach, apricot and lychees.  To be enjoyed as an aperitif with Roquefort, dark chocolate desserts, strawberries or melon.

Domaine Fournier Longchamps Savennières La Croix Picot

A truly superb example of a Loire Valley Chenin Blanc. Philip Fournier and his son Julien continue a winemaking tradition that began in the region more than 800 years ago. Their organically farmed estate sits in an extraordinary location; straddling the Loire Valley across five distinct appellations.

The Savennières AOC is situated just south of Angers, the historical capital of Anjou. Its 370-planted acres stretch across southern-exposed slopes on the right bank of the Loire River. Savennières’ shallow soils are comprised of well-drained sandstone schist, volcanic rock (rhyolite) and aeolian sand, which allow for excellent drainage, slight cluster dehydration and  resulting concentrated fruit flavours in the trademark Chenin Blanc.

Pair with white meats and Asian cuisine.

Domaine Klur, Cremant d’Alsace, Sans Souffre

£24.95
Add to basket

A traditional Crémant without the addition of Sulphur!  An astonishingly fruity nose of apple with the hints of brioche, with green apple, citrus fruits on the palate to complement the fine bouquet and long dry and soft finish.

Certified organic and following biodynamic practices, this small estate of just 7 hectares is nestled on steep slopes in the heart of Alsace.

Whilst Clement Klur is still very much involved at every stage from vine to bottle, he has now joined forces with his good neighbour, Leon Heitzmann, and their joint effort in the vineyards is reflected in the increasing quality of the wines. These vineyards are tranquil places, full of fruit trees dotted amongst the vines which attract and offer shelter to local wildlife. This symbiotic relationship helps maintain the health and balance of their land. The steep vineyards means the harvest is carried out by hand, allowing the pickers to be very selective and gentle in choosing the healthiest fruit to ensure that the resulting wine is always of the highest quality.
