A A Badenhorst Papegaai Dry Red

£18.95

23 vineyard, one wine! Introducing Papegaai Dry red 2021, or as it’s nicknamed on the farm, Papegaai Pansexual……  Think violets, blackcurrant cordial, crushed rocks and with crunchy cranberry accented acids. Serve chilled and gulp heartily.

Made by Adi Badenhorst in Swartland, this has fast become one of our favourite wines!  Why the parrot?  As well as making amazing wine, Adi also has a sideline in breeding the endangered Cape Parrot as there are fewer than 1000 left in the wild.  Also, some of the proceeds of this wine go to the Cape Parrot trust.

Daniel Ramos Vina Padre

£18.95

A blend of grapes, mainly based on Rufete from Salamanca and Garnacha from Gredos, all small, high altitude, mountainous vineyards (up to 1000m!). Even including some white. As always with Daniel, this is a ‘hand-made’ wine, with no fining or filtration. Simply made in concrete vats and a portion in seasoned, oak.

The resultant wine is fleshy and juicy, with good tannic grip and texture. The flavours are pure and honest, with a real sense of wild, mountainous viticulture. Great freshness through a long finish.

Matias Morcos Criolla Chica

£19.50
Add to basket

The label depicts an ancient, rudimentary method of viticulture where old immigrant vines have essentially grown feral like ‘little trees’. The task of the grape picker becomes precarious and involves erecting wooden ladders for harvesting amidst wayward branches. This can still be seen in some far-flung pockets of eastern Mendoza as well as in Salta in the far north.

This wonderful example of Criolla Chica has a beautiful red berry ripeness with aromas of strawberries and cherries. It is light and soft in the mouth with juicy acidity and a delicious, delicate finish. Best served lightly chilled, it’s a real eye-opener and a great springboard into the lovely Criolla family swimming pool.

In Rioja (Spain) this style would be classed as a ‘Joven’ style, meaning young and un-wooded, but being in the new world and Rutherglen in particular, this wine is lifted to an extra level. A fabulous new world interpretation of a long standing old world variety.

Dense red/purple. Complex with rose petal and dark cherry juice and cranberry aromas with some light cedary wood spices. A balanced palate profile with soft flavours of cherries, dark plums and a backbone of light tannins that extend through to a long and refreshing finish.

It looks light but it packs a delicious punch with raunchy acidity and playful, quite pronounced tannins, almost like biting into a delicious red apple. The fruit for this wine is sourced from Yarra Valley, south eastern Australia. It features the classic hallmarks of Cabernet Sauvignon; blackberries, blackcurrant on the nose and palate with aromas of blackcurrant intermingling with wood notes and cedar on the nose. Supremely drinkable at a refreshingly restrained 13% alcohol. We are big fans of this wine, a superb example of finesse and quality over the usual syruppy fruit bombs New World wines often produce. Marta Soares is the pioneering wine maker at Casal Figueria, a project started by her late husband, Antonio.  With 13 hectares of vineyards in Vermelha, just 80km north of Lisbon, they found centuries old vines of Vital and Castelão scattered in the slopes of the Serra de Montejunto.  An artist herself, Marta combines art and wine in the vineyard and the labels.  The local village’s tradition of making chalk drawings on people’s houses to celebrate Epiphany are the inspiration of many of the bottle labels.

Ultra low intervention expression of a once common variety.  Castelao brings real crunch and zip of fresh berry fruit, with a slightly sour, red cherry acidity, wrapped in an earthy blanket. Drink with charcuterie and any pork dishes.  It works great chilled as well!

Antonio Macanita is the winemaker at Fitapreta in Alto Alentejo and he is winning awards left, right and centre.  Despite this, he is very adventurous in his wine making, being likened to some of our favourite South African producers, Pieter Walser or Adi Badenhorst.  Having trained at top wineries in Napa Valley, Bordeaux and Australia, he’s settled in Portugal making great wines in largely forgotton territories with indiginous grapes.

Translating as ‘Touriga in the nude’, this is 100% Touriga Nacional grapes; unoaked to allow an abundudance of bright red fruits to shine – raspberry and redcurrant dominate the nose and palate.  This is a big, bold and complex wine that is utterly delicious.

Great to pair with pan fried fish, pasta with a tomato based sauce, roasted vegetable dishes and traditional paella.
