Flametree Chardonnay

£23.95
Add to basket

This wine is one of our best kept secrets.  There’s some great French Burgundy out there, but you could just buy this instead; it’s that good!

The Towner family established their family run vineyard and winery in 2007 in the heart of Margaret River; one of Australia’s premium winemaking regions. They quickly established a reputation for producing multi-award winning hand crafted Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon wines with unique flavour, structure and depth.

Citrus and floral notes with some grapefruit aromas, coupled with dried pear, stone fruit and subtle French oak on the palate. An outstanding wine.

Pair with oily fish, white meats, seared tuna steaks and pan fried tiger prawns.  Unbelievable for the money.

Quinta Dos Roques is a small family producer in the Dão Region, focused on working the family vineyards with traditional grape varieties.  For over a century wines were made as as part of a co-operative predominantly for household consumption, it is now a project designed to produce high quality Dão wines.

Its fair to say that Quinta dos Roques single-handedly revived the reputation of the Dao’s finest white varietal, and still enjoys the reputation as the finest exponent of Encruzado.  Increasingly, Luis Lourenco prefers to keep the oak element in the background, and let the grape’s citrussy profile express itself as much as possible.  Quinta dos Roques Encruzado is regularly rated as one of the country’s leading dry white wines.  Perfect with seafood or spicy dishes.

Clochard La Calcinara

Located in the rolling hills of Ancona in the Marche, on the eastern coast of Italy, La Calcinara is headed up by the high-spirited and talented Berluti siblings, Paolo and Eleonora.

So named Clochard, meaning vagrant in French for being produced from verdicchio vines that lie outside the Verdicchio Castelli DOC boundary. Never underestimate the outsider! This is really very smart- lime zest, spring hawthorn and apple blossom, with a fine, chalky element and touch of cardamon too. The palate is zippy and bursting with life – lime juice, a gentle bitter and creamy almond note, and briney freshness too, finishing long and with long, yellow-pepper accented tang.

A truly superb example of a Loire Valley Chenin Blanc. Philip Fournier and his son Julien continue a winemaking tradition that began in the region more than 800 years ago. Their organically farmed estate sits in an extraordinary location; straddling the Loire Valley across five distinct appellations.

The Savennières AOC is situated just south of Angers, the historical capital of Anjou. Its 370-planted acres stretch across southern-exposed slopes on the right bank of the Loire River. Savennières’ shallow soils are comprised of well-drained sandstone schist, volcanic rock (rhyolite) and aeolian sand, which allow for excellent drainage, slight cluster dehydration and  resulting concentrated fruit flavours in the trademark Chenin Blanc.

Pair with white meats and Asian cuisine.

Moorooduc Estate Chardonnay

£24.95

Established in 1982 by Richard and Jill McIntyre, Moorooduc Estate is a small, family run wine business that has developed an enviable reputation for complex and food friendly wines.  Their wines are fermented using only wild yeasts (found on the skin of the grape and in the air) and minimal intervention to allow them to express the character of the individual vineyard sites.

This is a serious but seriously fun Chardonnay; Elegant and powerful with lemon and citrus aromas with notes of spice and cedar before a subtle balance of white peach, nectarine and lemon on the palate with an utterly satifying touch of brioche popping up at the finish from delicate French oak ageing. Wowsers.

Pairs beautifully with white meats, delicately spiced Asian dishes and pan fried salmon.

Keermont Estate may well take the prize for most beautiful vineyards and views in all of South Africa. And yup, there’s some pretty stiff competition!  Nestled in a natural amphitheatre between the Stellenbosch and Helderberg mountains, their ambition is to produce wines that reflect the natural wonders of this exquisite place.

61% Chenin Blanc, 13% Sauvignon Blanc, 23% Chardonnay and 3% Viognier, with the backbone of the Chenin blanc from a 40 year old, unirrigated vineyard called ‘Riverside’.  One of the great things about Keermont is that they never rush to release their wines, so it’s developed some nicely waxy notes, pear tarte tatin, butterscotch and honeysuckle, macadamia nuts with a herbal, both sweet meadow and fresh green herb palate and long, tangy finish.

Every one of Pieter’s wines is a story, rather than a grape variety, and it’s the juice inside the bottle which reveals that story. He doesn’t own any vines, but instead scours South Africa’s winelands for top-quality fruit that has somehow slipped under the radar.

100% Verdelho from the Voor Paardeberg. It’s rich, it’s ripe, it’s opulent, but so well-balanced. Keylime pie, mango and hints of cardamon, with the most lovely lushness to the palate, like a whipped creamy pudding and hints of ginger too.  It goes exceptionally well with Thai food.  If you like your whites bold and big, this is for you – slightly later picked, but very fresh and high acidity.
