These are the maiden releases of two wines made from Callan’s favourite grapes, Semillon and Cabernet Franc. Striking packaging won them the People’s Choice award at the 2017 Wine Label Design Awards; the contents will blow you away.
Cabernet Franc from an Elgin vineyard 200 metres above sea level and close to the Atlantic ocean and its cooling breezes. There’s not much Cabernet Franc being grown around South Africa unless for a small component in Bordeaux blends, especially from Stellenbosch. But it really suits this Elgin climate so it’s great Callan managed to give this little vineyard a stay of execution. Picked pretty late so it’s very ripe, but retaining acidity thanks to the climate. Fermented in French oak barrels (none new, predominantly third fill).
Arresting, sensual aroma of redcurrants, spice and capsicum. Carnal texture, muscular, with spice and intense blackcurrant. Soft tannins, long finish.
