Bodega Tamerán, Gran Canaria Malvasía Volcánica
£45.00
The winery, based in San Bartolomé de Tirajana in Gran Canaria, is a collaboration between ex-Manchester City footballer David Silva and acclaimed winemaker Jonathan Garcia Lima (of Ocampo and Suertes del Marques). The pair, both Canary Island natives, met after David tasted Jonatan’s Tenerife wines while living in Manchester. Impressed, he messaged Jonatan to congratulate him, and they quickly bonded over their island roots and love of great wine.
In 2019, under Jonatan’s guidance, David bought an existing south-facing vineyard in Gran Canaria at an elevation of 600-700 metres above sea level. Set within a natural amphitheatre and surrounded by native shrubland, the six-hectare vineyard, planted on sandy volcanic soils, is organically farmed and planted with indigenous white varieties Marmajuelo, Vijariego Blanco, Baboso Blanco and Malvasía Volcanica. The vineyard’s high elevation and aspect provide optimal sun exposure during the growing season, resulting in fruit with vibrant acidity and beautiful aromatics.
The 2024 Malvasía Volcánica is bright and mineral-driven, with lifted aromas of citrus peel, sea spray and white flowers. A natural cross between Malvasía Aromática and Marmajuelo, the wine displays this variety’s distinctive saline edge and calcareous tension. On the palate, it is precise and refreshing, offering notes of lemon zest, grapefruit, and crushed stone, with a clean, mouthwatering finish that speaks to its volcanic origin.
