Donnhoff Tonschiefer Dry Slate Riesling
£29.00
Dönnhoff is a leading estate in the Nahe, a small German wine region known for Riesling grown on a mix of volcanic rock, quartzite, and slate. The family has farmed in Oberhausen since the 18th century and has built its reputation on precise, site‑specific wines that express the geology of each vineyard. The Nahe’s varied soils and moderate climate allow Riesling to ripen with high natural acidity and clear mineral definition, and Dönnhoff’s vineyards on steep, stony slopes are central to that style.
Tonschiefer Riesling trocken is sourced mainly from the upper parts of the Oberhäuser Leistenberg, where dark clay‑slate soils dominate. The grapes are hand‑harvested and fermented in a mix of stainless steel and large traditional oak casks to retain freshness while adding subtle texture. The wine is dry, around 12% alcohol, and consistently shows green apple, citrus, and stone‑fruit notes with a marked slate‑derived mineral character. Acidity is firm and linear, giving a clean, precise finish that reflects the cool site and the heat‑retaining slate soils.
