Lionel Osmin & Cie, Tannature Sans Soufre
£17.95
Lionel Osmin’s Tannat‑ure Sans Soufre is a sulphur‑free red from the foothills of the Pyrenees, made by a producer who has spent the past decade championing the native grapes of South‑West France. Osmin works with growers across the Béarn, Madiran and Irouléguy zones, where Tannat is shaped by a mix of clay‑limestone soils, Atlantic influence and the cooling effect of altitude. The climate is warm but moderated by ocean winds, giving a long ripening season that helps tame Tannat’s naturally firm tannins while keeping acidity high. The Sans Soufre cuvée is made with organically farmed fruit, native yeasts and no added sulphur, aiming for a clean, direct expression of the grape.
The wine is fruit‑forward, showing blackberry, plum skin, violets and a touch of spice, with fresh acidity and firm but manageable tannins that reflect the variety without becoming heavy. The finish is dry, slightly savoury and shaped by the grape’s natural structure. It’s a well‑made, no‑sulphur Tannat that highlights the region’s combination of ripeness, freshness and rugged mountain character.
