Merayo’s Mencía from Bierzo is a reminder of how expressive this grape can be when it’s handled with a light touch. The estate works with old bush vines in the hills around Valtuille, giving the wine a clarity and honesty that stands well apart from the region’s more industrial offerings.

The wine is bright and lifted, showing red cherry, wild strawberry, and a little crushed herb. There’s a gentle floral note—more wildflower than perfume—and a faint graphite edge that anchors the fruit. On the palate it’s supple and medium‑bodied, with fresh acidity, fine tannin, and a clean, mineral finish. Direct, unforced, and quietly compelling.
