From grapes hand harvested in small boxes at optimal maturity we produced this blended wine of special qualities. Each grape was fremented seperately in stainless steel tanks under temperature control, managed with daily pump overs to achieve a good extraction. The tannat was aged in american oak barrels for nine months; then the blend was made. At the bottling the wine was lightly filtered to preserve all its qualities
So often we find southern hemisphere Pinot dark and over-extracted and thus lacking typicity. Not so here. The nose is distinctly Pinot, with lots of fragrant red fruits, then there are enchanting notes of mushroom, soft cheese and even a touch of almond. The texture in the mouth is excellent; fresh and lean with well-balanced acidity to complement the fruit. The wine has a wild, untamed quality that we like very much and along with the other varietals in this range, it shows there is so much more to Uruguay than Tannat.
Tannat was introduced to Uruguay by Basque settlers in 1870, soon becoming the national grape. It has adapted perfectly to a challenging array of local conditions, producing dark, often powerful wines capable of extended ageing and complexity. Taming the tannins and producing soft, juicy, approachable wines such as this one is no easy task but in the right hands – Gabriel Pisano’s in this case – and with beautifully ripened fruit, Tannat doesn’t require a knife and fork to unveil its lovely dark secrets. This wine is part of the modern Uruguayan wine revolution; delicious upon release but happy to sit quietly in a cupboard for five years.
