Casas Relvas is a family run winery in the Alentejo region of Portugal, started in 1997 by Alexandre Relvas who saw in Herdade de São Miguel the vast horizons of his roots in Africa.  The family’s passion for the region has extended to the rebuilding of cork oak forests.

The Tinto is a blend of Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Touriga Nacional and Alicante Bouschet that changes slightly each year, the last few vintages of which have been fantastic.  It results in a full bodied wine, with plenty of cassis, no matter how much Cabernet Sauvignon is used, which delves into dark fruit with a crunchy minerality and some spice from toasted oak.  This is a great accompaniament to any Mediterranean dishes, especially lamb.

The fruit for this wine is sourced from Yarra Valley, south eastern Australia. It features the classic hallmarks of Cabernet Sauvignon; blackberries, blackcurrant on the nose and palate with aromas of blackcurrant intermingling with wood notes and cedar on the nose. Supremely drinkable at a refreshingly restrained 13% alcohol. We are big fans of this wine, a superb example of finesse and quality over the usual syruppy fruit bombs New World wines often produce. If you are a fan of mid-range Bordeaux, this is well worth a whirl. Delicious!

Pair with cured meats, mezze or paprika based dishes.

Chateau Fleur de Lisse Saint Emilion Grand Cru

£32.95
Add to basket

Château de Lisse was one of the largest vineyards in Saint Étienne de Lisse in the early twentieth century. It is one of the oldest vineyards in Saint Émilion, which explains why the average age of the vines is 45 years. From 1940 to 2015 it belonged to the Minvielle family, who over the years made it prosper and modernised the winemaking business by building a vatting cellar. In 2015, the château was acquired by the Teycheney family, who already owned Château La Loubière and, being passionately interested in farming and wine, decided to farm using biodynamic methods.

Its bouquet is perfectly pure and expressive, displaying notes of red berries, cassis and blackberry, and is followed by an ample, smooth and remarkably balanced palate.  The finish is refined, the back-of palate discretely toasty and smoky.  It is the ideal accompaniment for grilled meat, lamb chops or blue cheese over an informal meal.

Chateau Angludet Margaux

£85.00
Add to basket

Home to the Sichel family since 1961, Château Angludet is one of the oldest properties in the Médoc, with a history which goes back to the twelfth century. It is named after Bertrand d’Angludet, a knight and lord of the noble residence which stood on this site in 1150.

Since 1758, the vineyard of Château Angludet has retained a configuration down the centuries which is very close to the original, 93 percent of the current surface area having nurtured vines for more than 250 years – exceptional continuity for a vineyard.

Surrounded as it is by Grand Cru Classé properties, Château Angludet would almost certainly have been included in the famous 1855 Classification, had the property not been broken up as part of an inheritance settlement. In an act of faith (given the property’s state of decay) and belief in Angludet’s potential, the Sichel family bought the estate in 1961. Since then, the Sichels have worked tirelessly to restore and, indeed, improve the vineyard and cellars, giving Angludet back the reputation its exceptional terroir deserves.

Full-bodied and showing immense power, with incredible concentration that will certainly benefit from extended cellaring, some critics suggesting up to 60 years, though it will still bring pleasure to the drinker even now. In its youth, it shows notes of fresh plum, crème de cassis, black truffle, graphite, chocolate, and chalky minerality, with its firm yet ripe tannins and freshness indicating its ageing ability.
