The leading (small) estate in the Dao revolution. At around 450m, Quinta dos Roques lies in the Dao heartland, just outside Abrunhosa do Mato.
Luis and Luisa Lourenco lead this family estate, producing a wide array of meticulously assembled wines, where both traditional blending, and varietal offerings both excel. The Touriga Nacional here is often cited as Portugal’s finest, while Quinta dos Roques Encruzado is regularly rated as one of the country’s leading dry white wines.
Here we have the classic red from this prestigious Dao estate. Touriga makes up about half the blend, with other varietals also from block-planted vineyards at the property. Aged in French oak for 10 months. That Touriga component contributes the mulberry fruit character which characterises Roques Tinto, but as with classic Dao blends, this is more than a sum of its parts.
Tucked behind the Serra Grossa, at the top of the Alrorins-Alcusses valley, is the rural idyl of Celler del Roure, an estate developed by Pablo Calatuyud and his father to shine a light on a more ancient and authentic style of Valencian wine and away from the bulk production the area was becoming more recognized for. His intention to rehabilitate long-forgotten grapes such as Mando, Arcos and Verdil was solidified with the discovery of a 500-year-old cellar on the mountainside property, with subterranean clay amphoras ‘tinajas’ in near perfect condition.
Aged in Tinijas shows the fresh and complex flavours of this wine. Ripe tangerines from the Verdil, sweet spice from the PX, balanced with fresh and mouth watering citrus, melon and a touch of biscuit from the Chardonnay and Macabeo. Finishing with a rich and creamy mouth feel that makes this wine a true show case of its style.

Cà ed Balos is a small family-owned winery with 6.5 hectares of vineyards in Castiglione Tinella in the Langhe, restored by Renata Bonacina and her husband in the 1990s, reviving Moscato d’Asti production there since 2008. The vines are farmed sustainably and are currently under organic conversion, long using ‘green manure’ to reduce further any need for chemicals.
This is a beautiful sweet moscato with flavours of peach, orange and honey. Perfect with fruit desserts or soft cheeses.
The Basque word ‘Masusta’ means ‘blackberry’ – and this wine takes its name from the huge bramble that is in the middle of the vines. A beautiful red-fruit bouquet of cherries and raspberries, it is fresh elegant on the palate, with nice earthy lick of oak, pepper and spice. Full of flavour, but not too heavy.

Le Clos Rouge Cuvée Parcellaire hails from a plot of old Gamay with some Pinot Noir planted on calcareous soil with basaltic debris. This red has a touch more body than their other wines, but is still marked by mountain freshness, and its purity is down to excellent work in the vines and sympathetic low-intervention winemaking. A delightful natural wine, aged in amphora. Flavours of juicy red berries and pepper.
A blend of estate and négociant fruit aged in concrete tanks, ‘Le Pur Fruit du Causse’ is Julien’s joyful vin de soif, gorgeously scented with notes of plum, violets, and herbs, a lighter more delicate style of Malbec from its original home.
Saroto Tinto is made from a small, old, field-blend parcel comprised of old-fashioned red and white Douro varieties. The resultant wine is full of wild forest fruit, lots of berries with a kick of natural sourness. Plenty of fresh acidity adds juiciness and balances the rustic, grippy tannins, making for quite a light red. Earthy minerality adds extra complexity and the finish is long and moreish.
Arribas Wine Company was founded in 2017, in Bemposta, Mogadouro. They produce authentic wines, based on regional varieties, old vineyards and traditional techniques. They farm their vineyards as sustainably and respectfully as possible, and make wines in a minimalistic way.
This old-vine field blend contains Verdelho, Malvasia, Posto Branco, and Bastardo Branco, amongst others. Barrel fermented for 7 months and with very hands-off winemaking.

Lovamor is made with fruit sourced from low-yielding 100-120-year-old Albillo bush-vines grown at 800-1100 metres elevation in the Ribera del Duero. A young orange wine made with the nearly extinct grape Albillo. The colour of farmhouse butter, aromas of russet apples, medlars and pear, with a chalky minerality and slight tannin from the skin contact. A really elegant orange wine that would suit anyone who tries it.
Quinta Dos Roques is a small family producer in the Dão Region, focused on working the family vineyards with traditional grape varieties. For over a century wines were made as as part of a co-operative predominantly for household consumption, it is now a project designed to produce high quality Dão wines.
Its fair to say that Quinta dos Roques single-handedly revived the reputation of the Dao’s finest white varietal, and still enjoys the reputation as the finest exponent of Encruzado. Increasingly, Luis Lourenco prefers to keep the oak element in the background, and let the grape’s citrussy profile express itself as much as possible. Quinta dos Roques Encruzado is regularly rated as one of the country’s leading dry white wines. Perfect with seafood or spicy dishes.
A blend of several vintages, this wine shows Duckman’s link to the greatness of Bairrada’s Baga grape. The heritage of Joao Pato can be seen in this more classic style of baga, with dark cherry and berry fruit, pine resin spice, and a good smack of acidity.
A deep cherry red colour, that is clean and bright in the glass. Good aromatic intensity with notes of ripe red fruits over a base of elegant balsamic. The palate is mellow and fresh, with nuances of delicate sweet fruit. It has a nice body with integrated, polished tannins, with touches of very ripe fruit and nuances of liquorice on a long finish.
The Alvarinho grapes for this wine come from several small vineyards planted in granite soil, at high altitudes. This altitude maintains the freshness and aromatics in the wine.

From a 3 hectare plot in Meursault, using vines aged between 30 and 65 years, this is the flagship wine from Sylvain Dussort. Grapefruit and lemon flavours with beautifully balanced, creamy oak. Perfect with meats or seafood.
Claude Marechal makes his wines as naturally as possible, his wines are pure and sleek with vibrant fruit and great potential to age. These wines are available in very limited quantities but are something you should definitely have in your cellar. No chemical fertilisers are used and the harvest is hand picked each vintage, Claude says he is usually the last in each appellation to pick which shows on the ripe fruited nature of his wines. Located in the villages of Bligny and Pommard, the sub-soil is essentially made up of gravel. The wine can be enjoyed young but will age beautifully for 5 to 10 years.
Aromas of wild honey and freshly baked bread which contrast with its dry, very racy texture. Core flavours are remeniscent of Asian fruits with a minerality that comes through. Similar to Jura in style but distinctively New World. Fascinating Chenin showing how South Africa is becoming a very exciting country for natural wine with life and vigour!
