Maison Sichel Margaux
An impressively elegant Margaux with impeccable provenance (declassified from one of the top Margaux Chateaux) showing textural richness and intensity, along with dark fruits and silky tannins. Drinking really well now.
Margaux wines are the most floral in all of Bordeaux, often compared to violets. The wines of Margaux are easy to pair with a wide array of different foods – especially lamb & game.
Guy Breton Marylou Beaujolais
So vibrant, fragrant, so beguiling, and so utterly yummy, best served just chilled. Redcurrants, tiny strawberries, and perfectly ripe cherries, with raspberry coulis, soft spice and the most glorious perfume. A fruit bomb without being sweet or sickly, and with pitch perfect acidity, lots of marshmallow and soft leather notes.
Domaine de la Charbonnière Vacqueyras
Domaine de la Charbonnière has 12 hectares of prime vineyard in Châteauneuf-du-Pape and 4.5 hectares in Vacqueyras. This is a top quality domaine making rich, succulent wines of great style. Michel Maret has now handed over the running of the property to his daughters. Véronique is the winemaker and sister Caroline is in charge of the office. The wines have always been superb but there is a new fresh elegance.
Holden Manz Big G
Located in the top, southern-most corner of the Franschhoek Valley, in the embrace of its spectacular mountains, the 22 hectare Holden Manz Wine Estate is situated between the Franschhoek River and Stony Brook at 300 meters above sea level. An exclusive grower of red grapes, the Estate only cultivates its top 16 hectares under vineyards, notably Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Syrah and Merlot.
Daniel Ramos Santon
Holy Moley! We love every wine from Daniel Ramos, and this single vineyard wine is no exception.
Made from 100% Rufete, it’s light and aromatic, delicate yet structured, and has wonderful natural acidity and therefore balance.
It’s a wild fermention, with very light extraction, followed by ageing in concrete and oak, with no fining or filtration. It’s silky and enjoyable now, but will develop plenty of complexity with age.
Keermont Syrah
Sourced from three different vineyards, and with a drop of Mourvedre added to the blend, the 2017 Syrah is inky in colour and with dark fruit, but surprisingly nimble – violets, mulberries and a little sizzling bacon fat. On the palate there’s fabulous hot cross bun flavours – all candied peel and baking spice and pepper, matched with savoury fynbos and brush and a little caraway. The finish is very fine with refreshing acidity and a certain crunchiness to the fruit. Delish!
Cara Sur Tinto
Cara Sur is a project of the prodigy Sebastian Zuccardi, from the esteemed Familia Zuccardi. Cara Sur means South Face and refers to the treacherous mountain-scape that overlooks the vineyards. The Bonarda grapes for this wine are grown at 1,500 metres above sea level at the Maggio Estate vineyard in Calingasta, where the vines are more than 50 years old and look more like small trees than vines.
This is a big, rich wine with a meaty like nose that gives way to herbaceous notes and sweet black fruits. An impressive Bonarda with great concentration of fruit and amazing length.
Saint Joseph Gerard Courbis
Gérard Courbis is based in the villages of Mauves, close to the boundary with Cornas and makes some very elegant traditional expressions of Northern Rhône Syrah that have both freshness and perfume, while retaining a lovely savoury edge.
Tenute Fiorebelli Amarone Della Valpolicella
The wine exudes aromas and flavours of black cherries, chocolate, coffee, and raisins, along with a note of almonds. Despite a formidable structure, the palate is velvety, spicy and elegant, with an extremely long and lingering finish.
Lourens Family Wines, Howard John
Named after Franco Lourens’ father, whose image features on the label, this is a such a charming red blend of Grenache, Cinsault and Syrah, all sourced from dryfarmed bush vines in the Swartland. The whole bunches bring gorgeous perfume, not just bright fruit, but lots of freshly cracked black peppercorns over pomegranate, pretty florals and hints of Asian spice. Such vibrancy on the palate with tissue paper fine tannins.
Château Lamothe Bouscaut Rouge, Pessac Léognan
Bouscaut is now producing some of the best wines in Pessac Léognan and certainly one of the best value wines in this much sought-after part of the Graves.
Domaine Catherine et Claude Maréchal Bourgogne Rouge Cuvée Gravel
Claude Marechal makes his wines as naturally as possible, his wines are pure and sleek with vibrant fruit and great potential to age. These wines are available in very limited quantities but are something you should definitely have in your cellar. No chemical fertilisers are used and the harvest is hand picked each vintage, Claude says he is usually the last in each appellation to pick which shows on the ripe fruited nature of his wines. Located in the villages of Bligny and Pommard, the sub-soil is essentially made up of gravel. The wine can be enjoyed young but will age beautifully for 5 to 10 years.
Domaine De La Cote De L’Ange Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Amazing value Chateaunneuf du Pape from a top producer. Leather, tobacco, cherries, oak, and smoky aromas.
Guy Breton Morgon Vieilles Vignes
Old vine Beaujolais from high altitude vines. Light, juicy, beautiful pure fruit with minimal intervention in the winery. Cranberry, blackcurrant and black cherry, some acidity adds freshness to the fruit. Just 3 hectares of vines, very low production.
Blank Bottle The Spaniard
Another triumph from Blank bottle. Our customers just can’t get enough of these wines! Tiny quantities made – just 3 barrels. This is big, but very well-balanced. Soft, juicy, rounded and loaded with fresh blackberries and blueberries, candied fruits and a kiss of vanilla. A gorgeous, rounded wine that looks and tastes flippin amazing.
De Angeles Malbec
The grapes are only ever from De Angeles’ one small vineyard – ‘Viña 1924 Parcel 3’ – and the age of the vines partly explains the stunning concentration here; but don’t expect a ‘blockbuster’, this is elegance itself. These un-grafted vines are trained low and pruned double guyot with 7,200 plants per hectare and everything in the vineyard is geared around the preservation of tradition. Everything is done by hand… harvesting, de-stemming, berry selection.
Deep ruby red in colour, lovely aromas of plums and sweet red berries, silky-textured in the mouth with incredible length. Elegant yet intense, fresh, complex, superbly balanced and, best of all, slightly wild and untamed. Simply one of the best Malbecs we’ve ever tasted.
Iona Solace
Layers of bramble and red berry fruit, with spicy, peppery aromas. Energetic and lightly rich palate that emphasises floral elements. The cool climate of the vineyards help to keep the ripeness of fruit in check, giving great freshness.
Cantine Povero Priore Barolo
Priore is an intense and prestigious Barolo, aged in oak barrels for a minimum of 28 months. Ruby red in colour. Notes of violet, dried rose and a little cinnamon on the nose. Full, rich and warming on the palate. One for venison I’d say. Will age for 10 years, if you can wait that long…
Marechal Chorey Les Beaune
An approachable and elegant Pinot Noir, redcurrant, raspberry and cherry aromas.
Chateau Fleur de Lisse Saint Emilion Grand Cru
Château de Lisse was one of the largest vineyards in Saint Étienne de Lisse in the early twentieth century. It is one of the oldest vineyards in Saint Émilion, which explains why the average age of the vines is 45 years. From 1940 to 2015 it belonged to the Minvielle family, who over the years made it prosper and modernised the winemaking business by building a vatting cellar. In 2015, the château was acquired by the Teycheney family, who already owned Château La Loubière and, being passionately interested in farming and wine, decided to farm using biodynamic methods.
Its bouquet is perfectly pure and expressive, displaying notes of red berries, cassis and blackberry, and is followed by an ample, smooth and remarkably balanced palate. The finish is refined, the back-of palate discretely toasty and smoky. It is the ideal accompaniment for grilled meat, lamb chops or blue cheese over an informal meal.
Ver Sacrum Doña Mencia de los Andes
Mencia from Mendoza; who’d have thought it? Wine geeks will probably buy this just because of the intrigue – and they won’t be disappointed. This is highly aromatic with lots of dried flowers – almost garrigue-like notes – cherry-drop candy, almonds, a burst of black cherry and a hint of black olive. Ever so sensuous in the mouth with lovely tension and fruit expression, we suspect this wine will age beautifully.
This bears very little resemblance to Mencia from north-west Spain (and we are big fans of that too!); it has an elegance rarely found there without extensive bottle ageing and it seems that the earthiness is replaced here by fruit and flowers.
Folding Hill Orchard Block Pinot Noir
Tiny volumes of this pinot noir are produced from a dedicated family owned winery. Dark fruits and some oak influence.
Le Soula Rouge
A project created in 2001 by Gerard Gauby and friends, Mark Walford and Roy Richards. Gerard Gauby was convinced that the old vines at Fenouilledes located on the heights at the foot of the Pyrenees benefited from a cooler climate and had the potential to produce wines of really high quality. At 650 metres above sea level these vines are some of the highest in France. The wines are renowned for their purity, vitality and indeed character.
Ca Dei Maghi Valpolicella Ripasso
Ca dei Maghi is a small farm in the hills of Valpolicella making very small quantities of the most exquisite wines. Although started in the 1950’s it is only since 2011 when Paolo Creazzi took over the reins that this estate has
gone from being ‘good’ to outstanding. Each year he seeks to express classical Valpolicella at its very best while his natural inclination to experiment and try new things is shown in the small range of IGT wines produced.
Luminous Hills Estate Grown Pinot Noir
A selection of barrels from across the vineyard: both volcanic and sedimentary soils of varying elevations, from southwest to southeast. The result of the careful selection of barrels and unique qualities of the vintage is a wine with impeccable balance and range, fruit and spice, power and depth, elegance and grace.
Gaja Ca’Marcanda Promis
Gaja Ca’Marcanda Promis is a blend of 55% Merlot, 35% Syrah and 10% Sangiovese. The three varieties are fermented and macerated separately for around 15 days, and after 12 months of oak ageing, the wines are finally blended together. The resulting wine shows aromas of black cherries and black plums. It is complex and deeper on the nose, with enticing notes of sandalwood and essential oils. It is well-structured, with a round mouth-feel, combined with a refreshing acidity.
Domaine Gaëlle et Jérôme Meunier Mercurey 1er Cru Rouge
Jérôme and Gaëlle both worked in the wine world before starting their own vineyard, Jérôme as ‘Régisseur’ of a domaine in the Côte de Beaune and Gaëlle was in charge of a wine laboratory. They have bought various parcels
of land in and around Mercurey over the years and in 2007 bottled their first vintage under their own label. In 2011 after another winemaker retired they took over 4h of vines in Puligny-Montrachet to complete their estate.
A wine with an intense colour and lovely black fruit notes of blackcurrant and black cherry. Can be kept for 5 to 10 years after bottling.
Blank Bottle Little William
Another great wine from Blank Bottle Winery with another great story behind it. This is made from ungrafted shiraz grapes from a quite unusual part of the Western Cape. Very high altitude vines, Pieter himself, claims this shiraz is more elegant and fine, more like Pinot Noir which is why he’s bottled it in this tall, slim bottle. From a tiny vineyard, only 600 bottles of this vintage were produced. The name and label comes from a time when he was driving back from the vineyard, on the phone to his wife and just around a blind corner, he spots something in the middle of the road. Slamming on the brakes, he finds it is a little boy in just a white nappy stood on the white line on the road. He ends up walking over a bridge with this little boy to a farmhouse where a woman comes out screaming ‘William’, mother and son reunited, good deed done! A few years later, he’s in hospital with his son and somehow gets chatting to a woman who ends up being the sister in law to the mother of ‘Little William’.
Cuvaison Pinot Noir
A characterful wine, brimming with blackberry, strawberry, plum and hawthorn berries, alongside a subtle black tea note in the background. Very fresh and balanced, with a long and supple finish.
Cantine Povero Dolcetto 3 Litre Box
This is really very good indeed, an instant hit! Incredibly well balanced. Full bodied but so, so easy to drink. Its kind of a bit Pinot Noiry but fuller, more voluptuous. Quaffable. This box is equivalent to 4 bottles and will stay fresh for a month after opening.
Chateau Saransot-Dupre Listrac-Medoc Magnum
One of Listracs most prominent estates with 17 hectares of vines. Due to Listrac’s cooler temperatures, Yves Raymond looks to Merlot and Cabernet Franc, rather than Cabernet Sauvignon as the essence of his wines in order to help them achieve optimum ripeness. This is a rich and slightly spicy Bordeaux with concentrated tannins. Very good indeed, drink now or keep for 10-15 years
Gitana Winery Saperavi
Ageing in clay amphora leaves mineral aromas alongside red fruits and creamy notes on the palate.
Chateau L’Enclos Pomerol
Since 2007, Denise and Stephen Adams have owned Château L’Enclos, located on the western, sun-drenched hillside of the well-known plateau of the Pomerol appellation. The vineyard of 10 hectares, comprised of 38 plots, has gravel soils upon a clayey sub-soil, containing traces of iron, commonly called blue clay. Work in the vineyard is carried out manually and a system of plot selection is implemented. The wines of Château L’Enclos express all the distinctive qualities of the terroir. They are renowned not only for their delicacy and silky tannins, but also for their sensation of freshness on the palate. Like all the properties owned by the Adams family, winemaking is done in accordance with the guidance of Michel Rolland, who seeks to produce a top-level wine here.
Bargylus Vin Rouge
“The Syrian Vineyard making the world’s most dangerous wine” – The Telegraph.
From Syria’s only private wine estate, this is a blend of 60% Syrah and 20% each Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Packed with fruit and spice, it’s a dinner party wine to impress, and what a talking point! Black pepper sprinkled summer fruits – bowls of plums and intense blackcurrant coulis, a dusting of cocoa and cinnamon. Rich yet with great lift and precision to the finish, and fine tannins.
Chianti Classico, Cigliano di Sopra
Located in the highest part of the Cigliano area, Cigliano di Sopra is a historic estate dating back to 1300. The estate is family-run with the utmost respect for nature and for their historic buildings. All the wines are produced with grapes from their own vineyards and are hand-harvested.
Violets, lavender and fresh red fruit. Wonderfully crunchy and pure, but by no means simple. You can really feel the ageing potential thanks to this depth flavour of sour cherry. The tannins and acidity are firm, and It respects the idea of Chianti Classico, but really, we’re almost in Riserva territory here given the attention to detail here, but they only produce one label. As winemaker Matteo shared “the idea we had when we started making Chianti Classico is simple. We want a wine that’s ready to drink. It should be on the table after a year and a half, but at the same time, this 2021 will definitely show its best in 5 or 6 years.”
Zerberos El Altar
The El Altar is one of Daniel’s single vineyard cuvees. The vines at this site near El Barraco are between 65 and 90 years old, and are planted on granitic soils with a Northern exposure. This, along with the altitude, helps to retain freshness in the wine.
Made in a very minimalistic way, the grapes are double selected, before de-stemming and fermenting naturally. The wine is aged in 600L French barrels for 1 year, and is bottled without fining or filtration.
This is a light and immensely elegant wine, exhibiting garnacha fruit beautifully entwined with herbs and spices.
Luis Canas Gran Reserva Rioja Reserva
Ruby red with earthy colour notes. Elegant and complex in the nose with a good concentration of black fruit, thyme and rosemary with secondary aromas of leather and tobacco leaves. It is polished and rounded, making it pleasant and easy to drink, yet with elegance and power. It has a long and persistant finish, with touches of black fruit jam and liquorice.
Turley Zinfandel Old Vines
From across twenty vineyard sites managed by the winery, many of which are too small to produce a single plot wine, with vines ranging from 50-130 years of age the winery has a large swatch of grapes to play with. This vintage shows a nose of wild herbs and white pepper, followed closely by delicate bramble fruits, a wonderful brightness and purity, balanced tannic grip and great freshness.
Zensa Organic Primitivo 3 Litre Box
The hugely popular Zensa Primitivo, now even better value, and with less packaging. This wine is just so easy to drink! Flavours of cherries, chocolate and rich fruit on the finish. Full-bodied but silky soft and delicious.
