Blank Bottle Luuks

£37.95
Read more

The second release of Pieter’s first ever Chardonnay.  The name comes from the barrel it was aged in: the first ever new barrel that Pieter bought.  Luuks roughly translates from Afrikaans to ‘lux’ or ‘luxury’ in English and it became a bit of a nickname for this wine aged in their fancy new barrel.

There’s an opulence here – clotted cream, white flowers and buttered toast too.  Honey cakes and a lush creaminess with hint of ginger.  So well-balanced, and with a long future ahead of it.

Chianti Classico, Cigliano di Sopra

£40.00
Add to basket

Located in the highest part of the Cigliano area, Cigliano di Sopra is a historic estate dating back to 1300. The estate is family-run with the utmost respect for nature and for their historic buildings. All the wines are produced with grapes from their own vineyards and are hand-harvested.

Violets, lavender and fresh red fruit. Wonderfully crunchy and pure, but by no means simple. You can really feel the ageing potential thanks to this depth flavour of sour cherry. The tannins and acidity are firm, and  It respects the idea of Chianti Classico, but really, we’re almost in Riserva territory here given the attention to detail here, but they only produce one label. As winemaker Matteo shared “the idea we had when we started making Chianti Classico is simple. We want a wine that’s ready to drink. It should be on the table after a year and a half, but at the same time, this 2021 will definitely show its best in 5 or 6 years.”

This is a light and immensely elegant wine, exhibiting garnacha fruit beautifully entwined with herbs and spices.

What sets this tawny apart is that it has been aged at the quinta, in the Douro Superior. This means it shows a very different developmental character to other tawny ports, most of which are aged in Vila Nova de Gaia, far cooler by the coast!

Ranked among the greatest wines of France, Vin Jaune is made exclusively from the Savagnin grape variety. Planted on blue Jurassic clays, it matures in oak barrels for 6 years and 3 months, without compensating for the evaporation share of around a third of the volume. A veil of yeast forms on the surface of the wine, and protects it from any oxidation. It is during this long ageing that it acquires its spicy aromas of nuts, almonds or curry.  Drink as an aperitif, or with chicken, fish, strong cheeses or bitter chocolates.
